DOCS DROP 2-1 DECISION TO HAMILTON
Hamilton scored twice in the top of the first and made it stand up for a 2-1 decision over Dayton Tuesday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
Devon Reed led off the game for the Joes with a hit and Ethan McAlpine followed with a single, only to see Reed get thrown out at third with McAlpine going to second. After Tucker Tubbs was hit by a pitch, Caleb Bryson doubled to deep center to drive in both McAlpine and Tubbs and give Hamilton a 2-0 advantage.
From that point, Dayton starter Zach Johnson was impressive, allowing just three hits over the next seven-plus innings with no walks and seven strikeouts.
The Docs scored what turned out to be their only run in the fourth as Garrett Gray doubled with one out, went to third on an error and came in on Brady Stewart's grounder to second.
Dayton stranded two runners in the fifth and had its first two runners reach in the eighth, but came away empty as a double play and a popout ended the threat. The Docs then had two on with one out in the ninth, but a pickoff followed by a strikeout ended the game.
Dayton (16-20) hosts Lake Erie Wednesday at 7:00 in a key game towards determining the final spot for next week's playoffs. The Docs trail the Monarchs, who currently hold the sixth and final spot, by 1.5 games with four to play.
