2013 LEAGUE STANDINGS
DOCS DEFEAT LAKE ERIE 2-1 IN FIRST-EVER GAME
Dayton scored two unearned runs in the sixth and made that stand up the rest of the way as the Docs won 2-1 in their first-ever Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League game Friday night against the Lake Erie Monarchs at Nischwitz Stadium.
The game was scoreless until Lake Erie pushed across a run in the fourth against Docs starter Adam Hall. After Eric Jacobson reached on a fielder's choice, he stole second and went to third as Trent Miller flew out to center. Andrew Sohn then chopped a hit up the middle to drive in Jacobson with the first run.
Dayton had its chances throughout the night, stranding a runner in scoring position in each of the first five innings. The Docs, though, were finally able to convert into a pair of runs in the sixth.
With one out, Jesse Rait reached second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Zach Mosbarger followed with a hit to left to drive in Rait and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Mosbarger went to third on a wild pitch and scored what turned out to be the winning run on a grounder off the bat of Joe Ford.
Dayton pitching took over from there as Trent Szkutnik (1-0) picked up the win, pitching three shutout innings in relief of Hall, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Jason Link earned the save with two scoreless innings, giving up one hit.
Mosbarger and Brian Bien led the Docs offense with two hits each.
Dayton (1-0) hosts Lexington in doubleheader action at Nischwitz Stadium Saturday starting at 5:00.
